Mark, looks like the wallet is full and ready! What is the average size of flies you like to throw for hybrids?

I am curious, since all my striper experience comes from the salt. There can be a big variaton in fly sizes and I used from size 4 or 6 hooks (small summer bait and selective/not hungry fish) to really big 3/0 or 4/0 herring/bunker flies. My favorite striper searching size fly is around 2/0 or 1/0.

Thanks Vlad,

I think your observation is very true and will apply well down here too! Good strategies! You will catch a lot by applying the same strategy here : )

The several rivers I fished are no secret spots... so the fish there see a lot of lures and baits everyday... very few people throw flies to them..which is good news. As you described, for spooky fish I tend to use small flies. 1 or 2. (in the wallet). For turbid water, I go big. Occasionally the good one will sneak up from the eddies. The run here tend to be a mixture of hybrid and striper. People told me stripers are more spooky and need low light condition... I think this is true. In general I like to fish small flies on less rapid water... it's more fun to cast and more like "stalking"... than chuck n gear... ha...

Vlad, I will need to tie some of your patterns! They looks so delicious!

Thanks Mark-great response! Can you let me know what are the most common baitfish stripers and hybrids feed on in your area? That will give me some idea for more realistic patterns (I am sure white/chartreuse/yellow/pink and similar attractor colors will catch fish anytime, but it is fun to 'match the hatch' with baitfish.)

That's awesome! Vlad,
I will love to see your new pattern! One of my friend in fishery department told me that 99% of striper diet in their study site were shad, Gizzard shad maybe. Early season they are smaller... maybe 1 to 1/0. I have seen bait fisherman use live shed about size 1/0.

Cool-I will try one soon... Shad look very much like some Atlantic baitfish (pogy/bunker.)
